What results can I expect using a performance chip?
Whether you own a compact car or a full-size SUV, there is likely some improvement to be made using an aftermarket performance chip. Also known as ECU chips, these small and inexpensive add-ons are easy to install and work on most vehicles containing ECUs and air intake sensors. If your vehicle was manufactured prior to the 1980s, unfortunately it's unlikely that your vehicle will be able to utilize one. For any more recent vehicles, however, there are many improvements that can be made after installing this device in under a half an hour.
There are two major benefits to using a performance chip, as well as several ancillary advantages depending on the type of vehicle you own and how you've modified it(if you've modified it at all). The first major benefit is a substantial increase in engine horsepower output, sometimes by as much as 60 additional HP. If you need a significant speed and power boost but can't afford the several thousand dollars required to purchase a new turbocharger kit, a performance chip can help you get part of the way there. The second major benefit is increased fuel efficiency, with potential to save 4-7mpg in gasoline expenditure.
If you already have your vehicle turbocharged, you can typically still use an ECU chip, as they should work fine when paired together. In fact, turbocharged cars can actually see the higher range of horsepower gains more readily, as the chip will help to optimize systems more effectively than the cars stock program could. On more standard vehicles, the horsepower gains will likely be less immense, but you can still get the high single digit to low double digit gains with a chip. Considering that many ECU chips cost under a hundred dollars, thats still a great deal for such a boost.
The best part about using a chip? The installation process. With only the most basic of automotive tools and 15-30 minutes to spare, even most novice upgrade enthusiasts could install the chip properly. Just be sure to follow all the instructions carefully and actually install the performance chip in the correct slot for most effective operation.
